Starting with a collage, a photograph, a line art drawing, a digital painting or a combination of the above, projected on my computer screen, I make very small changes within the picture. I save the picture and I make another small change. Those changes, as part of the artistic process, may go on for a few minutes or hours, they might as well continue daily for months. A series of changes transform the initial art piece into another one, a similar one, emphasizing the source, or a completely different one, making the source unrecognizable. I also like to continue with cut outs of my work keeping the option open to reassemble them if desired.
For me iteration means confidence, focus, calmness. Life is not perfect, life is unexpectedly adventurous. Loving imperfections and unpredictable surprises can be a challenge and a choice. Those iterative transformations mean not only a translation of life in art for me, but also knowing where my “wants“ and “values“ are carefully placed.
Using such a procedure to make art one would expect a result of trial and error, but it is not. It is a willing acceptance of the given starting material. It is a turning of strange into familiar. It is a collection of choices and a transfer of imagination onto a digital canvas. The given is a gift, as a human and an artist, to assign responsible for. The result has to be the result though and nothing else can replace it.
This means following the path without getting distracted from possibilities offered.
Endurance is not suffering, it is persistence, purposefulness and a loving way of channeling pathos.
One has to be sure the outcome is worth it to be consistent. And I am.
